The trunk-maker behind the Speedy and the Keepall.
The house
Louis Vuitton opened his trunk-making workshop in Paris in 1854, and the house still traces its bags back to luggage. The Damier check was introduced in 1888, and the Monogram canvas, with its LV initials and flowers, was created by his son Georges in 1896.
Most Louis Vuitton bags are made of coated canvas trimmed in leather. The canvas wears well, so the things to look at are the leather trim, the handles, the corners and the interior. Each listing states the condition grade and what comes with the piece.

Signature models
A rounded top-handle bag introduced in 1930. The number in the name (20, 25, 30) is its length in centimetres.
The soft travel holdall introduced in 1930. Bandoulière versions come with a shoulder strap.
An open tote introduced in 2007, with side laces that cinch or widen its shape.
Buying guide
General points worth checking on any Louis Vuitton piece. Each listing adds the specifics: condition grade, what is included and any flaws.
01
Bandoulière in a name means the bag comes with a detachable shoulder strap.
02
Untreated cowhide trim, called vachetta, darkens to a honey colour with use. An even patina is normal wear, not damage.
03
Bags made before 2021 carry a date code stamped inside; since 2021 the house has used an embedded microchip instead, so a recent bag has no date code.
04
The canvas is durable: look closely at the leather trim, the handles, the corners and the zip pulls.
Questions
It is French for shoulder strap. A Speedy Bandoulière or a Keepall Bandoulière is the version of the bag that comes with a detachable strap, so it can be carried by hand, on the shoulder or across the body.
Many Louis Vuitton bags are trimmed in vachetta, an untreated natural cowhide. It starts pale and darkens to a honey tone with light and handling. That patina is expected; what matters is that it is even and the leather is not cracked.
Every piece is physically inspected by our specialists before it is listed: construction, hardware, materials and markings are checked against what is expected of the maker and the era. Nothing is approved from photographs alone, and every sale includes a Certificate of Authenticity documenting what was verified on that specific piece.
